Open House Volunteers – Meeting Today
If you signed up, or would like to sign up, to be a volunteer tour guide for our Open House, Feb. 12th, there will be a meeting TODAY at lunch in the Learning Commons. Details of duties and expectations will be discussed. Bring your questions! Please see Mr. Pama, Ms. Marshall or Mrs. Wadsworth for more info.
After School Tutorial
A reminder to students that free tutorial help is running again and is available for students on MONDAYS and WEDNESDAYS after school in the Career Centre.
Foodsafe Certificates
FoodSafe Certificates are in! If you were in one of Ms. Robertson's Foods 9 classes last semester, please come pick up your FoodSafe certificate from the Foods room.
CLUBS
Math Club - Contests
1. Those who have signed up for the AMC: please come to room 137 at 8:45 a.m. THIS THURSDAY MORNING so that we can start on time.
2. Sign-up sheets for the Pascal, Cayley and Fermat contests are outside room 133. Remember these are the best contests to try if you have never done one before. See Mr. Skanks this week if you have any questions.
Key Club – Handbags For Hope
Do you have gently used handbags, scarves, or jewellery that you no longer need? The Key Club will be helping out Handbags for Hope. Proceeds go to BC Children's Neuroblastoma research and to local families who have children with Neuroblastoma. Key Club will be collecting items at lunch all this week (February 4-8). There will be a collection table set up by the lounge at lunch time.
ATHLETICS
Jr Girls & Jr Boys Basketball
The Jr Girls played an exceptionally strong game yesterday, beating Belmont 55 to 39. It was a well-coached and well-played game throughout. The whole team was very strong and committed to one another throughout an intense battle; special shout-out to point guard Charlotte Westhaver, 2 guard Sylvie Jenner, and Payton Henderson the "Giant Killer".
The Jr Boys were able to carry that inspiration into their game. The Junior Boys held Belmont and their 6'7" phenom to only 14 points in the first half. They ended up winning 56 to 44. Shout-out to Dawson Sears who corralled their big fella and Colby Parker who got his first start since 2018 because of injury and scored 17 to lead the Spartans.
Both teams are in the City Championships at Vic High this THURSDAY. Girls play at 3:30pm and the boys at 5:15pm. The boys play SMUS and the girls play PCS. Would love to see supporters if you are available.
CAREER CENTRE
Women in Trades Technology Field Trip
Could the students who have signed up for Camosun College’s Women In Trades Technology field trip please return their completed permission forms to the Career Centre asap. Only those with submitted consent forms will be permitted to participate. There are a few spots left for this amazing opportunity for girls on Wednesday, February 20th. Students will have the opportunity to explore and participate in activities in trades of Carpentry, Electrical, Automotive Service Technician, Sheet Metal/Metal Fabrication, plus four technology areas including Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. UVic Health Information Science Open House – Feb. 7
Students interested in learning more about the expanding field of information technology in healthcare are invited to attend the UVic School of Health Information Science Spring Open House, on THURSDAY, Feb 7th from 4:30 - 6:00 pm. Located in room 110 in the Hickman Building. Pizza and refreshments will be served.
Job Fair @ Butchart Gardens – Feb. 13
The Butchart Gardens is hosting a job fair, WEDNESDAY, Feb 13th, from 6-8 pm, for available positions during the upcoming summer season! Choose from food services, visitor services, seed & gift store, and gardening departments. $15.45 minimum starting wage. Visit the Career Centre for application information.
BCIT: Big Info Night – Feb. 20
Students looking into post-secondary options are invited to attend the BCIT Big Info Night, taking place at the BCIT Burnaby Campus on WEDNESDAY, Feb 20, from 4:30-7:30 pm. ‘Big Info’ is the largest program expo and information session at BCIT and is a great opportunity for students to get their questions answered by faculty and current students from over 300 programs – all in one place. Job Opportunity
Light Housekeeping (Beaverbrook Drive), starting February 26. This local, returning client hires students each summer to work every Saturday to help with odd jobs & light housekeeping. 7 hours weekly @ $15.00/ hour. Check out the posting in the Career Centre for contact information.
Volunteer Opportunities
Do you love LEGO? The Sidney Museum’s Lego Day is looking for 6 volunteers. Volunteers assist children to build a mosaic from Lego while master Lego builder Robin Sather builds a locomotive from Lego! Lego Day is February 17 & 18 @ 2423 Beacon Ave, Sidney. Shifts are 10:00 am - 1:00 pm or 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Contact information available from the Career Centre volunteer posting.
The Victoria Highland Games & Celtic Festival will be coming up soon, during the May Day long weekend, and needs volunteers. Volunteers are needed for ticket sales, directing visitors, helping with competitions, activities, the Celtic Music tent and more! Shifts are about 4 hours each. Free Retail Training
There is one spot open in the March Retail Training course in Sidney. This certificate program prepares you for first time work experiences in retail and many other work environments. Students are treated as an employee and you will be working alongside a busy team of staff members. This class runs from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm on Sundays and includes training in: Working a cash register and counting cash, customer service, creating displays, sorting inventory, assisting with pricing, opening & closing procedures. GRAD 2019
RE/MAX Quest For Excellence Bursaries
This year RE/MAX is once again offering (16) $1,000 bursaries for a total of $16,000 to grade 12 students. This program was established by RE/MAX of Western Canada to recognize the success and ongoing pursuits of Western Canadian students in regards to leadership and community contribution initiatives. Only online entries will be accepted; students enter online at www.remax.ca. Deadline for submissions for the 2019 Quest for Excellence program is midnight March 11th..
Magic Wand Project
The Magic Wand Project is a non-profit organization that offers an inexpensive alternative to grad outfits for both girls and boys. This is a chance to borrow, rather than buy, a dress, suit or tux, (a small fee for cleaning is the only charge). All outfits are new or like-new, and all accessories are included. Broadmead/Cordova Bay BC Transit Plan
BC Transit is hosting a workshop on February 19th as a follow-up to some open houses they had back in the fall. They are hoping to have 2 students that would be interested in provided a high school student perspective to the workshop, to better advocate for transit around the school. If any student is interested, please come to the office or see Mr. Westhaver.
Community Garage Sale – Feb. 9
There will be a community garage sale at the Lochside Elementary School gym on SATURDAY Feb. 9th, 9:00am - 1:00pm. Great deals for everyone. All funds raised go toward the Grade 5’s Camp Thunderbird trip.
Water Polo Athlete Recruitment Program

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at Peninsula Medical, 2a-2379 Bevan Avenue, Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30 - 7:30pm with both a doctor and mental health clinician on hand.
