GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
D-Day Trip in Europe
All students travelling to Europe for the D-Day ceremony: there is a brief meeting TODAY at lunch in room 327.

Blood Donor Clinic Success
Congratulations to the students, staff and parents of Claremont who donated blood at our in-school clinic on Monday.  In total, we had 69 donors attend, with only 9 deferrals.... so 58 units of blood were collected! This is an impressive number. Thank you all for giving the gift of life!!

Claremont Year-Long Drama – Daisy Pulls It Off
Claremont's Year-Long Drama’s presentation of the play, “Daisy Pulls It Off” continues TONIGHT.  It is a play about life in a 1920s English Boarding School. Part-comedy, part-drama; the play is appropriate for all ages.  “Daisy Pulls It Off” runs nightly @ 7:30pm, May 15-17 and May 22-25.  All tickets are $10 at the door.

Appropriate Clothing
Reminder that with the warm weather upon us, that Claremont School is a place of business and we ask that students wear appropriate clothing.  Ask yourself if your clothing choice is something that you would wear to your job?  If the answer is ‘no’ then it is probably not appropriate for school either.
The following is the Dress Code as listed in Claremont’s Code of Conduct:  “School is a place of business. Students and their parents are expected to support a learning environment where attire is appropriate. Articles of clothing that promote alcohol, drugs, inappropriate language or racism, or that are too revealing are not permitted. Students wearing such clothing will be asked to go home and change if they do not have suitable clothing at school.”

Wands for Wildlife – PEP 11 Leadership Project
Do you have old, used mascara wands? Instead of throwing them out, some students at Claremont have organized a two-week campaign in partnership with the Appalachian Wildlife Refuge’s initiative, “Wands for Wildlife”, where donated wands are used to help rehabilitate rescued animals, including removing fly eggs, larvae, and ticks from their fur or feathers. There is a bin located outside the front office where you can put your old mascara tubes, which not only prevents the plastic from entering our landfills, but can help save countless wild lives!  Campaign is on until Wednesday May 22.

Trades Exploration 2020
If you are wondering about, or considering, a career in the trades, Claremont offers the Trades Exploration program, introducing students to the fields of carpentry, welding, electrical and plumbing. The semester 2 TEX Program can help you discover the trade that suits you and your talents best, and leads into post secondary trades training. There are still seats available! Please see Mr. Arsenault in the Career Centre to register.

Last Day to Drop Classes – May 24
The last day to drop classes for this semester so that they don’t show up on your transcript is FRIDAY May 24.

Measles Catch-up for Students in Grades 10 to 12
Grade 10,11 & 12 students who are unimmunized or under immunized for Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) should have brought home consent packages last week. Please discuss the information in the consent package and involve your child in the decision to provide consent to immunization. The consent forms are due back by TODAY. Immunizations will be provided at Claremont school on TUESDAY May 28, 2019.

The Super Smash Bros Project M is on TODAY at lunch in room 215.

Spirit Squad
The next theme day is Twin Day – next FRIDAY May 24.  Find a twin buddy and put together a twin outfit!!

ATHLETICS
Girls Lacrosse - TODAY
There are two Girl's Lacrosse games TODAY.  At 10:15 a.m., New Westminster plays Royal Bay on the lower field.  And at 11:45 a.m., Claremont plays New Westminster.  Come on out at lunch and cheer on our girls!

CAREER CENTRE
Summer Leadership Training
If you are 14-18 years old and  have an interest in recreation and/or child & youth care, then the City of Victoria's Youth Leadership in Training Program might be for you. This summer program consists of 2 weeks of leadership training at the Crystal Pool in July, 4 weeks of City of Victoria summer camp placements, plus team building out-trips. Upon completion of the program, successful participants receive a $500 honorarium, a certificate, and a letter of reference. Applications due on June 17.  Visit the Career Centre for more info.

Broadcasting College
Be on the air in less than a year! Have you considered a career in broadcasting on radio or television? Western Academy Broadcasting College offers an accelerated program of 2 years' worth of training in one year! Learn through one-on-one tutoring and hands-on experience in real Radio and Television studios.  WABC works with students until they get hired.  Get more information at wabcwesternacademy.com or visit the Career Centre.

A full-time labourer is needed by local Construction company, Mike Geric Construction. Competitive wages, based on experience, with opportunities for promotional and educational advancement. 

Garden watering. Here is an easy, local temporary job opportunity!  A local resident, close to IDA Pharmacy in Cordova Bay, is looking for someone reliable and dependable to water her garden twice per week from August 10 to September 25th. 

There are multiple outside lawn/garden job opportunities! Some are short-term, some with long-term /regular potential. Good wages.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are still needed to help out at the Youth Employment Station at the Brentwood Festival on Saturday June 1st.  Help at this fun family event with children’s activities such as face painting and crafts. 4 students are needed for each shift of 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, and 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm, or you can stay the whole day!

Brentwood Bay Elementary needs volunteer help at their annual spring fundraiser! Help with games, inflatables, and face painting. There may also be a need to dress up as a super hero or princess and mingle with the families.

GRAD 2019
Grad Rehearsal – May 21
Reminder to grade 12’s that there is a mandatory grad rehearsal at the UVic auditorium next week on TUESDAY May 21.  All graduating students must meet in the Ridge Theatre at Claremont by 8:45 a.m. to prepare for bussing. Students will miss their morning classes and return by 12:10 pm. Grads are not permitted to drive their own vehicles to Uvic.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Claremont International Farewell Picnic – May 28
The Claremont International Farewell Picnic is on TUESDAY May 28 at Beaver Lake Park.  The bus will pick up students at 11:55, returning to Claremont at 2:00 (in time for block 4).  Lunch will be provided.  Bring your own water bottle and dress for the weather.  There will be gifts for the students who are leaving.  Please confirm your attendance with Brenda.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Walk For Muscular Dystrophy – May 26
The Walk for Muscular Dystrophy is coming up on Sunday, May 26th  (starts at 1pm at Beckwith Park).  Dacian Filipescu  is a grade 9 student here at Claremont with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and is this year's ambassador for the walk.  Dacian lost a friend to DMD last year and is dedicating his fundraising efforts to him this year. We have formed a Claremont Team for this year's walk and are hoping to get a good turnout from the Claremont community (staff and students) to show our support for Dacian and the cause. Peninsula Youth Clinic
The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at Peninsula Medical, 2a-2379 Bevan Avenue, Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30 - 7:30pm with both a doctor and mental health clinician on hand.
