GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

PAC Breakfast Cancelled This Thursday

A heads-up to all students who look forward to the usual Thursday morning PAC sponsored breakfast: it is cancelled for this Thursday. You can look forward to the bagels returning to the student lounge after Spring Break on Thursday mornings.


Student Parking – Registration Required

Reminder to all students who are parking in the student parking lot: you must be registered to park there. Permission forms are in the office. To become registered, the office needs: a parent-signed registration form, a photocopy of your driver’s licence, a photocopy of your car insurance, and $2 for the parking pass.


PAC Fundraising – Country Grocer Receipts

Support the Claremont PAC with your Country Grocer Receipts! Funds go towards the Breakfast Program, Grad 2020 and other clubs within our school community. Receipts can be dropped off at the Claremont office. Thank you!


CLUBS

Soup Sisters

Soup Sisters Victoria is a non-profit organization that supports people in need by making, sharing, and donating soup! Come to the Foods Room on THURSDAY March 12 at lunch, to find out how to gain volunteer hours by helping out... Next soup-making event is April 8.


Nintendo Switch Club

Nintendo Switch Club meets THURSDAY at lunch in Room 215. Bring your Nintendo switch controllers to join in on the fun!


Math Club

Congratulations to Audrey WANG, Kate SPICER, and Will ZHANG who had the top scores in the school on the Pascal, Cayley and Fermat math contests. Results are now posted in the Math wing. Also, this is the last call to sign up for the Euclid, Fryer, Galois and Hypatia contests. Sign up sheets are in the math wing.


Robotics Club - “Cheese” Fundraiser

Claremont's 1022 Robotics Team has qualified for the World Championships, which will be taking place in Kentucky at the end of April. Support is needed to help this club team pay for equipment and travel expenses required for this trip. The Robotics Team is selling Paradise Island Foods Cheese (Nanaimo, BC) to raise funds for this event. A four-pack variety of cheese (0.88 kg total) can be purchased for $20 at the Claremont office. Order forms are in the office and are available on the Claremont website. Thanks for your support!


Student Council - School Dance Cancelled
The Glow Dance on Thursday is cancelled due to low ticket sales. Please get your ticket refund from Ms Giordano in the Dance Studio at lunch TODAY and THURSDAY.


ATHLETICS

Jr Girls Soccer

Junior Girls Soccer team: there is an important but brief meeting TODAY at the start of lunch. We will meet just outside of room 303. See everyone there!


Golf Team

Attention Golf Team tryout participants: there is an important but brief meeting TODAY at the start of lunch in room 276 (textiles room) for all the students who are trying out at the Cordova Bay Golf Course on March 12th.


CAREER CENTRE

Coast Capital Youth Intern Program Info – Today

A representatives from Coast Capital will be at Claremont TODAY at lunch in the Student Lounge to talk about their Youth Intern Program.

For more than 25 years, Coast Capital has provided grade 11 and 12 students with a valuable, fun, (and paid) work experience through the program. Interns work alongside staff in branches throughout Greater Victoria, as well as represent Coast Capital at local events and youth-focused initiatives. Interns also complete volunteer hours by teaching financial literacy skills to other youth in their community.

Coast Capital is currently recruiting for a new team of Interns to begin their one-year term starting July 1st. They're looking for students that will be entering grade 11 or 12 in September 2020. There are a total of 8 positions in Greater Victoria. Online applications will be accepted until Friday, April 10, 2020. Pacific Design Academy Open House – March 12

The Pacific Design Academy is hosting its annual Open House this THURSDAY, March 12, 4:00-7:00pm. If you wish to work in Graphic Design, New Media, Interior Design or Architectural Building Technology, PDA is a great option. Their curriculum is dynamic and based on the needs of industry, and classes are small so the student gets individual attention. Explore the Trades

Have you ever considered exploring the Trades? Come to the Career Centre to find out about enrolling in Claremont’s TEX Program (Trades Exploration) for Semester Two 2021. You'll earn 24 Grade 12 credits, multiple training certificates, plus hands-on experience in Carpentry, Welding, Plumbing, and Electrical. TEX is open to all current Grade 10 & 11 students!!


Considering a Career in Finance? April 24 Event

Female students in Grades 11 and 12: come to the Career Centre to sign up for the Ladies Advancing Diversity in Investment Management (LADI) Event – an investment fundamentals course offered by BCI (British Columbia Investment Management Corporation) and CFA Society of Victoria and Women in Capital Markets (WCM). The event is designed to inspire high school students to consider a career in finance. Topics covered will include equities, fixed income, private markets and resume tips, all led by BCI investment professionals. This will be a fun, social and inclusive learning environment with both theory and hands-on activities to keep students engaged. The event is free and will be held on FRIDAY April 24, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, at 750 Pandora Avenue. Lunch & snacks included. There are 25 spots available on a first-come first-served basis.


Dream It Be It - Career Support for Girls - Apr 16

Soroptimist International of Victoria Westshore presents ‘Dream It Be It - Career Support for Girls’. This free event includes workshops and exhibits for those aged 15-24 who self-identify as female. An excellent opportunity to meet new people and get support regarding future career options and pathways. THURSDAY, April 16, 9:00 am – 2:15 pm at Chiefs’ & Petty Officers’ Mess, 1575 Lyall St., Esquimalt. Transportation and food is provided. Come to the Career Centre for registration info and to sign up.


Rotary Club's Adventures in Technology Program

Adventures in Technology takes place during the last week of April for approximately forty Grade 11 and 12 students from across Western Canada. Students stay with host families in Saskatchewan while they explore advanced technology, research, development, and applications via tours, informative lectures, and hands-on events at some of Canada's finest corporations and research facilities. See Ms. Loukes in the Career Centre for more information.


YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange Program

The YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange Program brings youth aged 16 and 17 together from across the country. Students have the opportunity to improve their second official language skills and gain important employment experience through work placement during their 6-week exchange. The first priority application deadline is March 15, 2020. All applicants who apply by this date will be contacted before May 1st. After that date, the second priority deadline for remaining applications is May 15, 2020. Any applications received after that time will still be considered as long as there is space available in your community to participate. Mini Med School - April 2

The BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute is inviting Grade 10-12 students to attend Mini Med School 2020 at the Royal BC Museum, THURSDAY, April 2, 8:30-3:30. Mini Med School includes a diverse curriculum that highlights leading-edge medical research, explores a variety of careers in health sciences, and offers the opportunity to participate in hand-on science. Graduation Transitions NEW DEADLINE - APRIL 17

Grade 12 Students: the new Graduation Transitions DEADLINE is Friday, April 17th. Make sure all of your Graduation Transitions requirements have been met by this date. Coming soon: watch out for your name listed at the school entrances, if you have not completed your GT! Come to the Career Centre if you have questions and to get your forms.


Yearbook Write-ups

Reminder to Grads to submit your grad write-up for the yearbook. The submission needs to be done online with your Google account on the Grad Page. You need to be signed into your Google account; the link and all instructions are on the Grad Page and the deadline is THIS FRIDAY March 13th.

Dry Grad Fundraiser – Car Boot Sale

Saturday April 25, 10:00-2:00

Everyone is welcome to participate in this first-ever, one-of-a-kind Dry Grad fundraiser!
The Dry Grad Parent Committee will be ’selling’ parking spots in our school parking lot. $25 per stall ($40 for two stalls). Multiple spots may be purchased. A Car Boot Sale is a fun event where you can sell your gently used items (that you would normally sell at a garage sale or online, AND you can browse and buy from multiple other sellers. Check your storage spaces, closets, and garages - you’ll be surprised at how many items you’ve been saving up to sell! All proceeds from the sale of parking stalls will go the Dry Grad 2020 celebration in June. Free parking - pet friendly - wheelchair accessible. Please spread the word to friends and family. One easy way to support the 2020 Dry Grad is to use a Thrifty Foods Smile Card for your grocery shopping. Thrifty Foods will donate an amount equal to 5% of the dollars you load on to your pre-assigned Smile Card to the 2020 Dry Grad. Smile Cards can be picked up at the Claremont office. Questions? Rocky Mountains Trip

International students: there is an amazing bus trip and tour planned to the Rocky Mountains, 4 days & 3 nights: April 19-22. Enjoy some of the best mountain views in Canada, explore the town of Banff, see wildlife and experience the 360 degree mountain view at the top of the Banff Gondola, with optional extra activities (Ice Walking Tour, Snowshoeing Tour, and Lake Louise Tubing). Peninsula Youth Clinic
For all youth aged 12-24: the Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at Peninsula Medical, 2a-2379 Bevan Avenue, Sidney (250-656-4143) and is open EVERY THURSDAY from 5:30 – 7:30pm, providing services for mental, physical, and sexual health. A doctor and mental health clinician is on hand. Walk-ins are welcome! Services are completely free and confidential in their judgement free zone.
