GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

TEx (Trades Exploration)

Claremont is exploring the possibility of offering a TEx program in Quarter 3 (Feb 1–April 22, 2021). This program would be full days (blocks 1 & 2) for 10 weeks. Students would get to sample 4 trades: Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing and Metal Work and would earn 8 credits. TEX is open to students in grades 10-12. If you are interested or if you have questions, please see Mr. Bussoli (room 217).


Course Drop Date – Nov 3

The last day to drop a Q1 course and not have it show up on your student transcript is TUESDAY November 3. A course drop form, signed by a parent, must be submitted to drop a course.


Spartan Wear – Due Date for Orders Extended until Oct 30

Spartan Wear is on sale!! If you would like to buy a Claremont Spartan hoodie, shirt, sweat pants, buff face covering, or lanyard, please pick up an order form from the Accounting Office. All sales are pre-order only. Deadline for orders & payment is THIS FRIDAY October 30 to Ms. Marshall in the Accounting office. Estimated time for clothing to arrive at Claremont is late November.


After School Homework Club

For all students who would like extra help in Math, English, Science or Social Studies: help from Education Assistants is available on TUESDAYS and WEDNESDAYS 3:00-4:00 after school in room 235 (computer lab). All students in all grades are welcome. Please wear a mask.


Peer Tutoring

Another avenue for students to get help with academic studies (Math, English, Science, and
Social Studies) is to work with a Peer Tutor. We have some volunteer Peer Tutors who are ready to be paired up with students asking for some extra help. If you are interested in having a Peer Tutor, please see Mrs. Wadsworth in the Learning Commons.


Photo Retakes – Oct 29

If you missed getting your school photo taken at the start of September, Photo Retake Day is THIS THURSDAY Oct 29, from 11:00 – 2:00. We invite our remote students to have pictures taken starting at 11:00 am., to be followed by our in-school students. Purchasing photos is optional, but all students in all grades need to have school photos taken for school identification purposes (grade 12’s too - even if you are having grad photos taken). Pictures can be ordered by going online to mylifetouch.ca, with Picture Day Retake ID: QU010018Q1.


Halloween at Claremont - Friday Oct 30

Yes, Claremont is celebrating Halloween!! THIS FRIDAY October 30th, we encourage students and staff to wear costumes. Please be advised, that you must still wear a mask with the usual guidelines. Get your photo taken at lunch time, and it will be uploaded for our Claremont Instagram virtual costume contest!!!


Numeracy Assessments

If you are a grade 12 student who has not yet signed up for next week’s Grade 10 Numeracy Assessments, please see Mrs. De Klerk. Completing these assessments is a graduation requirement.


SD63 Hairdressing Program

Studio 63 Teaching Salon is opening for business starting Monday October 19th and the Hairdressing students are excited to use their skills on the public now! COVID guidelines and screening procedures are in place and clients are asked to wear a mask when visiting the salon. Hair cuts are only $5 and other services are available at very reasonable prices. Call 250-652-5381 to book an appointment and come support this great Saanich School District program. We have a few Claremont students in this program right now too! Appointments are available:

UVic School of Health Information Science

Virtual Open House – Wed. October 28

UBC's Faculty of Medicine - Virtual Outreach Presentations

The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Medicine is excited to announce the launch of their new Medical Student Outreach Ambassador Program. The Faculty of Medicine plays a pivotal role in selecting and training medical doctors in British Columbia and wants to inform students about possible future careers in medicine. UBC medical students can provide 30-60 minute presentations to high school students. If you are interested in this, contact Mrs. Watson from the Career Centre, and she will organize a virtual presentation date for you.


Peer Health Educator Training - Nov 2 - Dec 14

AVI Health and Community Services is offering a Peer Health Educator Training, covering substance use, sexual health, overdose response, peer support skills and root causes of stigma. After the training, there may be future opportunities to co-facilitate workshops in the community and to work on the creation of a local sexual health podcast. Open to anyone aged 13 and older. The training will take place over Zoom on Monday evenings (4:00 to 5:30) from November 2 to December 14. Youth are encouraged to register before October 26 by emailing sarah.graham@avi.org or texting/calling 250-480-8823.


Post-Secondary BC (PSBC) Virtual Events: Nov 16-17

PSBC is hosting virtual events for Victoria students on November 16 (2-6pm) and November 17 (3-7pm).

UVic Info Sessions (Virtual)

UVic Student Recruitment has organized many upcoming virtual events for Students and Parents...

For example, Parent Nights will provide parents/guardians/supporters the opportunity to learn more about UVic. Attendees will enjoy a presentation by Dr. Lisa Surridge, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, with some helpful tips on being successful in post-secondary studies. The focus of the talk is helping parents (and students) navigate the transition from high school to university. The upcoming Parent Nights are as follows:

GRAD 2021

 Schulich STEM Scholarship ($100,000)

The Schulich Leaders scholarships for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are valued at $100,000. Up to 100 of these scholarships will be given this year. Claremont can nominate one grade 12 student. If you would like to apply, application forms can be found on the Scholarships page in the Claremont website. Student Transcript Service

Grade 12’s: Did you know that YOU can access your own transcripts from the Student Transcript Service website? You can view your transcript and/or send them to a Post-Secondary Institution of your choice, at any time. It is easy to make a BCeID account on the Student Transcript Service. NEW Programs at the Upside Teen Centre (Saanich Commonwealth Place)

Reminder that there are FREE, registered drop-in style programs for older teens at the Upside Teen Centre. Youth can pre-register online or come to the centre at programs time and register in person!

Peninsula Youth Clinic

Peninsula Youth Clinic is operating through Telehealth on Thursday evenings 5:30 - 7:30pm Appointments with doctors or mental health workers are conducted by phone or video. Services are completely free and confidential in their judgement free zone for any medical concerns, to get prescriptions, or to speak with a counsellor. To make an appointment, call 250-656-4143.


Foundry Youth Clinic

Foundry Victoria Youth Clinic offers young people ages 12-24 health and wellness services, with doctors, mental health workers, and peer support workers. Foundry is open for virtual and on-site appointments. To make an appointment, call 250-383-3552. Phones are answered beginning at 10:30AM on weekdays to schedule appointments for the day.
