GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

CC350 – June 6

The CC350 is back!!  The action runs all day THIS MONDAY June 6th, 9:00-3:00. This event is a fundraiser hosted by the IGS 12 class. Teams will be cycling 350 laps around the track, raising money for climate change initiatives. We hope to see students outside enjoying the action at break times and lunchtime.  There will be snacks and food trucks at lunchtime!

 

Claremont Spring Sports Tournament – June 6

The Claremont Spring Sports Tournament is also happening THIS MONDAY June 6.  If you are interested in signing up your group of 5 friends to compete in this fun event, come to the IGS room (264) TOMORROW (FRIDAY) at lunch.  Games such as Spikeball, Sumo-Suit Wrestling, and Capture the Flag will be part of the competition, and we have great prizes!  Only one teammate per team has to come to the meeting, and come ready with your team’s  5 names.  The first 6 students to walk in the door will receive a free iced coffee!

 

Student Success

Big congratulations to Renée BATALLA, a Canadian Junior National Team Diver. Renée won GOLD in the Women’s 10M at the 2022 Summer Senior National Diving Championship last weekend. This spectacular achievement qualifies her for the Canada Cup (in Calgary June 9-12) and the Commonwealth Games (in Birmingham, England Aug 4-8).  Go Renée!!

 

After School Homework Club

For all students who would like extra help in Math, English, Science or Social Studies: help from Education Assistants is available on TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS after school 3:15-4:15 in room 235. All students in all grades are welcome.

 

Work Experience Credits

Any students who think they might be working or volunteering this summer and want to receive high school credits for Work Experience, MUST REGISTER for Work Experience with Mr. Arsenault.  Come see Mr. Arsenault in the Career Centre any morning to register.

 

Iceland 2022 Spring Break

The popular Iceland 2022 Spring Break trip is sold out to 24 students. We are hoping the school district will approve 6 more students.  There are already 3 on the waitlist.  Contact Mr. Gardner for details if you are interested in this epic adventure.  dgardner@saanichschools.ca

 

IGS - Zero Café

The Zero Café is open in the IGS Room 264 before school and at lunch every day of the week. Americanos, Lattes, Cappuccinos, we’ve got them! Get all of your delicious coffee drinks at a fraction of the price that you pay at the big coffee shops.

 

School Bus Registration for 2022-2023

Registration is now open for students to ride the school bus for the next 2022-2023 school year.  Students must be registered with SD63 Transportation Department and hold a current year bus pass in order to ride on the bus.  Registration is on-line, and you will need the following information when registering: Student Name, School, Grade, Student Number.  Here is the LINK for registration, and it will close June 15, 2022

 

Antigen Tests for Students

Reminder to students that if you didn’t pick up your box of 5 antigen tests yet, they are available in the office. Students are allowed to receive one box each.

 

Absences and Illness

A reminder that parents/guardians notify the school office every day that a student will be absent from school. PLEASE indicate if the reason for absence is for illness; the Ministry of Education requires that schools specifically track how many student absences are due to illness. Please notify either the Attendance email: claremont_attendance@saanichschools.ca or by phone message: 250-658-6666.  Please perform BC’s K-12 daily health check before arriving at school by clicking HERE .

CLUBS

Key Club – School Supply Drive

Claremont Key Club is hosting a School Supply Drive throughout the month of June! They will be accepting pencils, paper, duotangs, binders, markers, and more. Please bring any items to Ms. Pang's room (room 135), the front office, or the Learning Commons. All donations will go to the Compassionate Resource Warehouse for Ukrainian refugees.  Thank you for your support.

 

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Host Families Needed

Saanich International Student Program (SISP) is actively looking for new Host Families for our International students joining us at the end of August 2022.  Make lifelong friendships, provide a student with a home away from home and share the beauty of your community!

If you are interested in this opportunity, host families are provided:

·      $975 per month per student (students must have their own bedroom)

·      Ongoing support from the SISP Homestay team

·      International students who are fully vaccinated

GRAD 2022

Sign-up for Grad Banquet Tables – June 8 & 9

Grads, it is time to think about who you want to sit with at your grad banquet.  Seating is assigned for the dinner only; afterwards, everyone can move around freely and mingle.

Here are the details…..

1. Pick 1 friend to represent your group.

2. Tables can seat up to 10 guests. Your group can be from 1–10 people.  You don’t need 10 guests to submit a group.  (sign-up forms are in the office)

3. Names can only be on one list, so confirm the Grad (and Guest) want to be in your group.

4. Fill in a Sign-up Form of who is sitting at your table (No List = No Sign-up.)

     a. First and Last Name of Grad

     b. First and Last Name of the Guest.

5. On WEDNESDAY June 8 & THURSDAY June 9 at lunchtime: one member of your group brings the list to Room 220 (Robotics Room).

6. If you don’t sign up by the end of lunch on Thursday June 9th, tables will be assigned for you.

Sign-up Forms are available in the office now. Come by to pick one up.

 

Scholarship: Environmental Studies

If you are a grade 12 student with plans to study Environmental Studies in university or college, please see Ms. Tong as soon as possible about a scholarship opportunity!  Room 323. 

 

Grad Ceremony Tickets

By now, our grade 12 students should have seen an email from UVic about grad tickets, sent to the SD63 STUDENT EMAIL of each graduating student. The email included this information:

Your tickets for the upcoming Claremont High School Graduation 2022 are attached. Tickets can be printed at home or scanned off a smart device.

Extra tickets will go on sale TUESDAY June 7th at 9.30am.  Please call the UVic Ticket Centre, 250-721-8480 to purchase tickets.  2 extra tickets per student is the limit, until they are gone.  Extra tickets are $10 each + handling fees.

Please note this event has assigned seating with each ticket having a unique bar code relating to an individual seat. Babies, even if being held, must have a ticket to enter the venue. Graduating students do not require a ticket to participate in graduation.

 

As of March 11, 2022, face coverings are optional. We ask all to remain kind and respectful of the personal choices that each individual may make regarding mask use.

Parking On Campus: Parking information can be found on the UVic website HERE. Parking can be paid in advance or on the day of the event at one of the pay meters

Grad 2022 Fundraiser – Online 50/50 Draw

Grad Online 50/50 Raffle is well under way.  This will be the final Grad fundraiser.  Tickets are $10 each or three for $20.  Deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, June 8th at midnight. Draw is Thursday, June 9th at 12 pm.  Tickets can be purchased online by anyone residing in BC over the age of 19, so please share this LINK for 50/50 with family and friends and help support our Grads.

Our Grad Parent Executive is looking for volunteers to assist with our year-end Grad

events on MONDAY June 27th and WEDNESDAY June 29th. Parents/guardians can sign up to assist with supervision, setup, takedown and other tasks on these days by using this LINK.

Volunteer Victoria will be visiting Claremont to tell students about the benefits of strategic volunteerism & engagement in community service. Earn Volunteer Hours starting now, throughout the summer, and beyond!

Job Opportunity

One of our neighbors near Elk Lake is looking to hire someone for general help at her farm, mainly picking berries and weeding. The job starts as soon as possible and continues through the summer, with flexible hours. $16/hr. Please see Mrs. Watson in room 222 for contact information.

 

NEWS FROM CLAREMONT PAC

Mental Health & Anxiety Workshop #2 – June 8 

CPAC is hosting a mental health & anxiety virtual workshop #2 with Dr. Lydia Vallieres on TUESDAY, June 8, 7-8pm for parents which will focus on some theory around the triggers of anxiety (items we didn’t cover in 1st workshop) and 12 practical guidelines and tips for parents to learn how to better support their teen’s anxiety. Students are welcome to attend.

In the new school year, we’ll coordinate additional workshops tailored to teens.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Family Pride Event

The first annual Saanich Pride in the Park event takes place in Beckwith Park on THURSDAY June 16, 5-9pm. This event is free, and will feature family-friendly activities, entertainment and displays. Everyone welcome.

 

2SLGBTQ2IA+ Drop-in Social Group

There is a new 2SLGBTQ2IA+ drop-in social group at The Upside Youth Centre.  MONDAYS from 3:30 – 5:30pmThis is a safe space to be yourself and connect with a youth leader and peers. Play games, make crafts, spend time outside and connect with our staff. Youth in Grade 6 - 12 are welcome! Sign up HERE.

 

Peninsula Youth Clinic

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at 2379 Bevan Avenue in Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30-7:30pm for help with any medical concern (physical, mental, and sexual health). Call 250-656-4143 to make an appointment with a physician or counsellor.  Services are 100% free, confidential, and explicitly inclusive of all genders and sexualities!
