GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Parent Volunteers/Drivers for Next Year

Reminder that all volunteers for School District 63 are required to complete a Criminal Record Check every three years. Sports and trips may start up quickly in September, so we encourage parents to be proactive and do this NOW, if you might be interested in driving, as the process can take a few weeks at rush time.  On the Claremont Secondary home page, under Quick Links, find the Parent Volunteers link and follow the steps.

 

Yearbook

If you already ordered a yearbook, please pick yours up in the Student Lounge TODAY at lunch or after school. If you are wondering if you ordered a yearbook, please check with Mr. Howat or our accountant, Belinda Waller. 

A few extras were ordered; if you still wish to buy a yearbook, you can purchase one at the Accounting office for $45.

Report Cards

Report cards will be handed out on two separate days, outside at the main entrance of the school.  Parents, siblings and family members are also welcome to pick them up:

WEDNESDAY June 29, 9:00-1:00 (4 hours).

THURSDAY June 30, 11:00-1:00 (2 hours)

  

Claremont Music Program Fundraiser – Summer Treats Sale

Candies, popsicles and ice-cream will be for sale TODAY and FRIDAY at lunch at the Ridge Theatre ticket office (just outside of the theatre). Come by and purchase some summer treats; funds raised will help the music program get some instruments repaired over the summer.

 

After School Homework Club

For all students who would like extra help in Math, English, Science or Social Studies: help from Education Assistants is available on TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS after school 3:15-4:15 in room 235. All students in all grades are welcome.

 

REVISED Schedule for June 16

To properly schedule the Literacy & Numeracy Assessments, the entire school will follow a Copernican class schedule consisting of two long blocks per day.

THURSDAY June 16

Block 2: 9:00 – 11:45

(Lit/Num Assessments: 9:00 – 12:00)

Block 4: 12:30 – 3:12

(Lit/Num Assessments: 12:30 – 3:30)

 

Found

Are you missing a piece of octopus jewellery?  Please come to the office to claim it.

If you have found an unusual-looking charge cord (it has a flat end where it attaches to a specialized laptop), please return it to the office.

 

Check Your Student Email

A reminder for students to check their school email for different notices throughout June- especially Grades 10-12!

 

Work Experience Credits

Any students who think they might be working or volunteering this summer and want to receive high school credits for Work Experience, MUST REGISTER for Work Experience with Mr. Arsenault.  Come see Mr. Arsenault in the Career Centre any morning to register.

 

IGS - Zero Café & Baked Goods

The Zero Café is now selling baked goods too, along with their special coffees!  Come down to the IGS room (264) for a delicious treat with your morning coffee or a nice after-lunch dessert.  See you there!   

 

Absences and Illness

A reminder that parents/guardians notify the school office every day that a student will be absent from school. PLEASE indicate if the reason for absence is for illness; the Ministry of Education requires that schools specifically track how many student absences are due to illness. Please notify either the Attendance email: claremont_attendance@saanichschools.ca or by phone message: 250-658-6666.  Please perform BC’s K-12 daily health check before arriving at school by clicking HERE .

  

ATHLETICS

CSI Rowing

Congratulations to the following CSI Rowers:

Tegan ZECHER has been selected to represent the South Island Zone in the BC Summer Games in late July up in Prince George.

Quinn McCOY has been offered a spot on the Junior National Team as part of the CanAmMex squad alongside Lucas TURNER. This is a huge accomplishment for a grade 10, as these spots are typically achieved by Grade 12 students.

 

Athletic Awards - June 21

All Claremont athletes are welcome to attend the Claremont 2022 Athletic Awards.             TUESDAY, June 21, 4:00-6:00, in the main gym. Free to all (if you paid the $40 athletic fee) or $10 if not.  Pizza, T-shirts, Draw Prizes, Ice Cream, and Awards!! 

 

CSI Rowing Year-End BBQ and Awards – Friday June 24

BBQ starting at 6:15pm outside the Student Lounge.

Awards starting at 7:15ish in the Ridge Theatre.

There is a $10 ticket price for all non-current CSI Rowing students that would like food. Family, friends, alumni, and future Spartans are invited as this is a celebration of our past year and a look forward to next year! Spread the word! If you don't want food, no need to buy a ticket.  Last day to RSVP for food is Friday June 17th.  $10 for food upon arrival (if not paid beforehand) for all non-CSI Rowing students.

CLUBS

Key Club – School Supply Drive

Claremont Key Club is hosting a School Supply Drive throughout the month of June! They will be accepting pencils, paper, duotangs, binders, markers, and more. Please bring any items to Ms. Pang's room (room 135), the front office, or the Learning Commons. All donations will go to the Compassionate Resource Warehouse for Ukrainian refugees.  Thank you for your support.

 

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Host Families Needed

Saanich International Student Program (SISP) is actively looking for new Host Families for our International students joining us at the end of August 2022.  Make lifelong friendships, provide a student with a home away from home and share the beauty of your community!

If you are interested in this opportunity, host families are provided:

·      $975 per month per student (students must have their own bedroom)

·      Ongoing support from the SISP Homestay team

·      International students who are fully vaccinated

GRAD 2022

Grad Scavenger Hunt – Deadline to Sign Up is TOMORROW

Grads, reminder to sign up for the FUN outdoor Scavenger Hunt planned for the morning of MONDAY June 27th. The form to sign up your team is on the Grad Page of the Claremont Website. The deadline to sign up your team is TOMORROW (FRIDAY) June 17th.

 

Grad Ceremony Tickets

Additional tickets for the Claremont Graduation Ceremony are still available from the UVic Ticket Centre.  If you did not get a chance to purchase up to 2 extra tickets, there are still some available.  Parents who have not purchased extra tickets will have the opportunity until Thursday June 16th @ 4:00 pm. 

If any tickets remain, on Friday, June 17th ticket purchase will be open to all families on a first come first served basis with no reserve on limit for as many families as can be accommodated.  Price: $10 per ticket + taxes.

Volunteers Needed for Year-End Grad 2022 Events

Our Grad Parent Executive is looking for volunteers to assist with our year-end Grad

events on MONDAY June 27th and WEDNESDAY June 29th. Parents/guardians can sign up to assist with supervision, setup, takedown and other tasks on these days by using this LINK.

Child Care Needed - July & August

A family in the Prospect Lake area is looking for a mature student to care for/nanny their 1-year-old son for 2 to 3 days per week in July & August. The toddler is very easy going and naps twice a day. The family would be happy for the student to spend lots of time outside with their son. Please see Mrs. Watson in room 222 or email cwatson@saanichschools.ca for the contact information if you are interested. They will pay a good hourly wage and include lots of perks!

PAC Fundraiser: Country Grocer Receipts

Here is an easy way to support your PAC year-round. Save your Country Grocer receipts and bring them to the school front office. We appreciate your participation in this fundraiser which will benefit our school community with up to $2000 in grocery gift cards.

 

COMMUNITY NEWS

Family Pride Event – TONIGHT

The first annual Saanich Pride in the Park event takes place in Beckwith Park TONIGHT, June 16, 5-9pm. This event is free, and will feature family-friendly activities, entertainment and displays. Everyone welcome.

 

2SLGBTQ2IA+ Drop-in Social Group

There is a new 2SLGBTQ2IA+ drop-in social group at The Upside Youth Centre.  MONDAYS from 3:30 – 5:30pmThis is a safe space to be yourself and connect with a youth leader and peers. Play games, make crafts, spend time outside and connect with our staff. Youth in Grade 6 - 12 are welcome! Sign up HERE.

 

Peninsula Youth Clinic

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at 2379 Bevan Avenue in Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30-7:30pm for help with any medical concern (physical, mental, and sexual health). Call 250-656-4143 to make an appointment with a physician or counsellor.  Services are 100% free, confidential, and explicitly inclusive of all genders and sexualities!
