Beef Jerky - Fundraiser

The Senior Boys Basketball ‘Travel Team’ will be selling Beef Jerky products at lunch TODAY in the lounge. Snacks range from $2 - $3.50.

VEX Robotics Club meets TODAY at lunch in the Robot Room.

Spirit Squad: Halloween Events
Spirit Squad has some Halloween events for you this week!!
TODAY is Meme Day:  have fun figuring out the Memes today!
TODAY: there will be a pie-eating contest at lunch in the lounge.
WEDNESDAY is Halloween: wear your costume to school and come to the annual Costume Contest at lunch in the big gym.

Key Club: UNICEF Boxes
The Key Club has teamed up with UNICEF - an international organization that works to improve the lives of children and their families. Please donate any change you may have into the small orange box sitting on your teacher's desk until Nov.1st. Thank you.

Key Club: Cans for Candy
In support of the Key Club's Trick or Eat campaign, the Learning Commons will be accepting canned and non-perishable goods TODAY, TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY this week.  In exchange, you will get a small treat bag and will be helping someone in need! See the posters around the school for the list of most needed items.

ATHLETICS
Jr Boys Basketball

The first tryout for this year's Junior Boys Basketball team will be this WEDNESDAY right after school at 3pm in the big gym. The next tryout is this SUNDAY at 1pm.  There will be be one more tryout next week, if necessary. If you cannot make either of these tryouts or have any questions, please see Mr. Neufeld in room 264 at lunch time.

Fall Sport Updates
Claremont Spartan Teams have had a busy, busy, successful Fall.  Congratulations and good luck to all players and coaches as they enter playoffs and championships. Go Spartans!!!


Cross Country had the Island Championships last week. Liam Kirkendale won the Jr Boys race and 11 of our athletes have qualified for the BC Championships this Saturday in Nanaimo.

Jr Boys Soccer placed 3rd in league and are playing for the City Championship tomorrow at 3:00 vs Reynolds at Braefoot.  They have qualified for the Island Championships held in Victoria next week on Monday & Tuesday.

Sr Boys Soccer  finished league play and are beginning Colonist Cup play at Royal Bay.  They have  also already qualified for the Island Championships early in November.

Jr Girls VolleyBall (A)  finished second in league play and have begun the City Championships . Claremont will host the City Finals next Monday and will enter Island Championship play Nov 9/10 at Brentwood .

Jr Girls Volleyball (B)  as a 'second team' can only play in league and can not qualify for playoffs. A successful season has come to an end. Congratulations to these players.

Jr Boys Volleyball successful league play led to a 21-3 record and 3rd place. City Championships are this Thursday/Friday at PCS and Island Championships are Nov 9/10 at Oak Bay.

Sr Girls Volleyball are top 4 in a league and have seen the 3 above ranked in the top 10 provincially this year. The girls have beaten 2 of those teams and are peaking at the right time. They host City playoffs tonight and are headed for the Island Championships Nov 16/17.

Sr Boys Volleyball our provincially ranked #3 team are first in league and will wind up that part of the season on Wednesday night when Claremont hosts the last league game. City playoffs follow and then the Island Championships hosted at Claremont Nov 16/17. Hopefully an Island Championship and a strong BC run to follow.

Lacrosse Boys have had an excellent fall of training, which culminates into 3 upcoming events. 1) This Thursday the Sr Varsity Team travels east to Baltimore and New York to take part in one of the most popular and competitive recruiting tournaments in North America. Could be life changing for quite a few players.  2)  On November 23 the entire CSI Lacrosse program will be hosting the Spartan Shootout before our fall season ends with 3) a trip to Seattle for the Space Needle tourney Nov 30-Dec 2.

Field Hockey
for the first time since 2015 Claremont is entering a team into league as well as the Island Championships, which takes place in early November.

Aquatics - Island and BC Championships are upcoming and the school will have a very strong representation in ability and numbers.

CAREER CENTRE
Soldier For A Day- Work/Study Program

The BC Army Reserve is hosting a Soldier for a Day program on SATURDAY, November 17th.  This program is an introduction to the role of the BC Army Reserve both here in your home community, across Canada and even around the world. It’s also worth 6 1/2 hours of work experience. Don’t wait too long to sign up, as spaces are filling up fast!

For students in grades 10 to 12: the BC Army Reserve is also hosting a full time SUMMER employment program; this includes leadership training, paid community service, plus up to $8000 of educational reimbursement funding.  See Mr. Arsenault in the Career Centre for more information on both of these opportunities.

District Hairdressing Program
Any students interested in the dual credit Cosmo/Hairdressing Program, offered by SD#63 in partnership with Vancouver Island University, please see Mr. Arsenault  in the Career Centre to sign up for the Feb. 2019 start!

Art Colleges Fair – Nov. 28
Students interested in Art and Design: mark your calendars for the Art Colleges Fair on Wednesday, November 28th at St. Michael's University School, from 6:00-7:30 pm! This art fair is a great opportunity for students to learn about a number of art and design programs in the U.S. and Canada. Visit the Career Centre for a list of the art schools that will be participating.

University Visits
A representative from the University of British Columbia will be at Claremont TOMORROW (Wednesday) after school in the Learning Commons.  Find out all you need to know about admissions and programs offered at UBC!

A representative from University of Victoria will be at Claremont on FRIDAY Nov. 2 at lunch in the Learning Commons  There will be a presentation with information all about UVic and the rep will be happy to answer any questions. Save the date!

Volunteer hours can count toward Grad Transition requirements and/or are a necessary requirement for some university program admissions. The Career Centre has information about various volunteer opportunities for students, including the following:

Fire/Rescue Camp
Applications for the March 2019 Fire/Rescue Camp are now being accepted. If you have ever wondered what it's like to run into a building that everyone else is running out of, dreamed of using an extrication tool to cut up a car and access a victim, imagined handling a hose so powerful that it takes two people to hold it, or thought you could dangle off a rope 50 feet in the air.... then consider applying for the Gulf Island Fire/Rescue Camp! This 51/2 day camp takes place during Spring Break and qualifies you to 100 Work Experience hours (4 school credits), as well as a certificate of completion. Deadline to apply is November 8!  Application forms are in the Career Centre; see Mr. Arsenault in the Career Centre.

Tic toc, tic toc... Get your GT done and you will rock!  Pick up your forms from the Career Centre and interview with your favourite teacher!  Grad Transition is a must to do; the sooner the better - you know it's true!

Dry Grad Meeting – Nov. 6th
Our next Dry Grad meeting is TUESDAY, Nov 6th @ 7:00pm in the Learning Commons.  We invite all parents to join us to learn about the event, discuss ideas and find out ways that you can help out.   If you are interested in coordinating a position but unable to make the meeting, we have the following positions available:

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at Peninsula Medical, 2a-2379 Bevan Avenue, Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30 - 7:30pm with both a doctor and mental health clinician on hand.
