GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Night of Dance – Jan 21 & 22

Night of Dance is next week Jan 21 & 22 at 7pm. Tickets are on sale at lunch starting THIS THURSDAY in the Student Lounge. Only $5 for Claremont Students ($10 for all others).


Claremont Musical Theatre – The Little Mermaid

Claremont presents Disney's "The Little Mermaid" this February 27-March 7th. Come 'under the sea' with us as over 75 students in the cast, crew and orchestra re-create the magic of one of Disney's favourite musicals. Shows are: Feb 27-29 & March 5-7 @ 7pm, also Saturday matinees on Feb 29 & March 7 at 1:00 pm.

Early Bird special for the month of January: $13 for all tickets. As of Feb 1, the regular price of tickets will be: adults $16, and children/students/seniors $14. Group price available for $13 each (for a group of 8 or more). Please call 250-658-6672 to reserve/buy your tickets.


School Bus Passes

Reminder that if you are registered to ride the school bus to please pick up your bus pass in the school office. The drivers will be asking to see them!


Student Parking – Registration Required

Reminder to all students who are parking in the student parking lot: you must be registered to park there. Permission forms are in the office. To become registered, the office needs: a parent-signed registration form, a photocopy of your driver’s licence, a photocopy of your car insurance, and $2 for the parking pass.


PAC Fundraising – Country Grocer Receipts

Support the Claremont PAC with your Country Grocer Receipts! Funds go towards the Breakfast Program, Grad 2020 and other clubs within our school community. Receipts can be dropped off at the Claremont office. Thank you!


CLUBS

YCI – Warm Clothing Drive This Week

January 13-17: Claremont YCI is hosting a "Warm Clothes For Cold People" clothing drive all this week. Please bring in any warm or winter clothes that you would like to donate to the bins in front of the office. All clothing will be donated to Threshold Youth housing. Thank you for your support.


Trivia Club

Trivia Club meets every WEDNESDAY at lunch in Ms.Stover's room (322). Everyone welcome. See you tomorrow at lunch!


Robotics Club

Robotics Room is open TODAY and WEDNESDAY at lunch.

CAREER CENTRE

BC Universities & Colleges Info Night – TONIGHT

Universities and Colleges of BC will visit Parkland Secondary TONIGHT, 6:30-8:30 pm to share information about their programs. This event is open to all high school students in the Saanich School District, so go check out the programs offered at the most popular BC schools!


Canadian Coast Guard College to Visit Claremont – Jan 15

A rep from the Canadian Coast Guard College will be at Claremont on WEDNESDAY, January 15 at lunch time in computer lab 225. Find out how to receive post secondary education in Marine Engineering or Marine Navigation. High school students can apply to the Officer Training Program in their grade 12 year. This is an excellent opportunity for tuition-free education!


UVic to Visit Claremont - Jan 16

All students wondering about UVic admissions and programs, come to the Learning Commons THIS THURSDAY, January 16, at lunch time. A UVic representative will be available to talk to you and answer any questions.


RCMP Training in Saskcatchewan – 5 days in Spring Break

The RCMP is inviting 32 grade 12 students from across Canada to the Youth Engagement Week held at the Police Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. The program will take place from March 23 to 27. Costs for travel, accommodations and meals will be covered by the RCMP. This is a great opportunity for students, who are interested in a career in law enforcement, to experience a week of what training in the RCMP looks like! Go to the Career Centre to for the application – Deadline to apply is January 31.


Women in Trades Exploration Day - Feb 26

Camosun College is hosting a ‘Women in Trades Exploration Day’. This fun, hands-on day introduces students to trades in electrical, carpentry, sheet metal, and automotive... as well as tech fields like civil & mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer science. Sign up now in the Career Centre to spend a day exploring trades and tech opportunities. The event is on WEDNESDAY Feb 26, 9:30-2:00 @ Camosun College Interurban Campus.


Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre Field Trip: Feb. 28 - March 2

If you are age 16-18 and you're keen on marine biology or a general science career, consider signing up for the Bamfield Marine Sciences Field Trip, which runs Friday Feb. 28 – Monday March 2. Registration deadline is January 15. To apply, contact Rhiannon Cockayne (SIDES): rcockayne@saanichschools.ca

The actual cost is about $600 per student (3 nights, food, accommodation, 2 boat trips, & program costs), but some sponsorships are in the works that may reduce the cost to $300 per student. If the cost is prohibitive, please let Rhiannon know as we want all interested to have the opportunity to join us on this trip. Note: the days are VERY busy, and students will be engaged from 7 am until 9-10 pm (with time for meals, of course!)

Volunteer Opportunity

Saanich Peninsula Hospital is hoping to place 10 youth as Extended Care Unit Meal Time Hosts, via their weekend volunteer program. This is a great opportunity for youth interested in pursuing a career in health care and who are passionate about supporting senior citizens. Application deadline is January 20th. Visit the Career Centre for more information.


Explorations in Technology

Registration is ongoing for TEAC 105 (Engineering Sampler-Civil, Mechanical, Electronics and Computer), taking place at Camosun through the South Island Partnership. There are still spots for Feb 2020. Talk to Ms. Loukes in the Career Centre soon, if you're interested!

Dry Grad Meeting – Jan 14

Reminder that the 2020 Dry Grad committee meets TONIGHT at 7 pm in the Learning Commons. Some Coordinator positions still need to be filled.

First time bookings only: The online bookings for grad photos is now open for two days only: Monday, January 20th & Tuesday, January 21st

Retakes: If you need to book retakes, those appointments will be done at the Lifetouch Studio. Please contact Lifetouch to book an appointment by calling 250-744-4100.

All International students: please come to a Farewell Pizza Lunch on THURSDAY January 16th in the Theatre to say good-bye to the students who are returning home at the end of this semester.

Broadmead and Cordova Bay: BC Transit Planning

Phase One open houses occurred last fall and stakeholder engagement occurred in the spring. BC Transit has taken peoples’ feedback and developed some potential route modifications as well as brand new routes within the plan area.

In the new year, BC Transit plans to bring these potential route changes forward for public review. See below for details:

Monday Jan. 20, 3:30 -6:30 pm @ Lochside Elementary, 1145 Royal Oak Dr.

Wednesday Jan. 22, 2:00 – 5:00 pm @ Cordova Bay United Church, 813 Claremont Ave.

Thursday Jan. 23, 4:30 -7:30 pm @ Cordova Bay 55+ Association, 5238 Cordova Bay Rd.


There will be an accompanying survey available online as well through the BC Transit website. More details on the survey will be made available closer to the date.


Parents As Education And Career Coaches – Jan 30

Are you the parent of a high school student? Would you like to help them with their post-secondary choices? This is an interactive workshop designed to give you the skills and confidence you need. Educational Planner is presenting "Parents as Education and Career Coaches" on THURSDAY January 30th, 6:30 pm, at Stelly's Secondary School. There is no registration and parents can just come! Peninsula Youth Clinic
For all youth aged 12-24: the Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at Peninsula Medical, 2a-2379 Bevan Avenue, Sidney (250-656-4143) and is open EVERY THURSDAY from 5:30 – 7:30pm, providing services for mental, physical, and sexual health. A doctor and mental health clinician is on hand. Walk-ins are welcome! Services are completely free and confidential in their judgement free zone.
