GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Parent-Teacher Interviews: April 28

Semester 2 Parent-Teacher Interview night is THURSDAY April 28, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.  Parent/guardians have the option to book online through our school website for an 8-minute appointment.  All information to book is on the front page of the Claremont website.  The link for booking an appointment opens TONIGHT at 7pm and closes THURSDAY April 28 @ 10:00am. Conferences fill up fast so please book early.

 

REVISED CLASS SCHEDULES: April 26-28

Provincial Numeracy and Literacy Assessments will be taking place for many students on April 26 & 27.  To properly schedule these assessments, the entire school will follow a Copernican class schedule consisting of two long blocks per day (this was the class schedule used for all of last year).  Please note the revised Class Schedule for those two days:

TUESDAY APRIL 26

Block 1: 9:00 – 11:45

(Lit/Num Assessments: 9:00 – 12:00)

Block 3: 12:30 – 3:10

(Lit/Num Assessments: 12:30 – 3:30)

 

WEDNESDAY APRIL 27

Block 2: 9:00 – 11:45

(Lit/Num Assessments: 9:00 – 12:00)

Lunchtime Yoga

Students and staff are invited to join in 20 minutes of relaxation/yoga TODAY at lunch 12:00-12:20 in room 322.  Come by for an opportunity to slow down and relax!

 

Pursuit of Excellence Fundraiser – Movie Matinee May 5

Pursuit of Excellence is hosting a Movie Matinee fundraiser on THURSDAY May 5th at 3:30. $5 tickets will be sold on FRIDAY April 29 at lunch in the student lounge.  The movie will be Black Panther. Popcorn and candy will also be sold at the event.  All proceeds will go to BC Cancer Foundation. Thank you for your support.

 

Zero Café – Coming Soon!

Do you like coffee?  Silly question.  Do you hate spending your whole lunch hour racing down to Tim’s or Starbucks?  Fear not my friends, a solution is now at hand.  The Zero Café is opening in the IGS Room 264 before school and at lunch every day of the week; full start is on TUESDAY, but some drinks may be drinks available before then. Americanos, we got ’em. Caramel Lattes, check. Cappuccinos, you bet. Get all your delicious coffee drinks at a fraction of the price that you pay at the big coffee shops. So what are you waiting for?  Pop on down to the Zero Café and give your brain a delicious liquid hug today!

 

Claremont Blood Drive

The Claremont Blood Drive is coming up soon!  Appointments for Claremont students are available on TUESDAYS, WEDNESDAYS and THURSDAYS at 3pm in May and June.  You must be at least 17 years old to donate.  Book online at Blood.ca or download the 'GiveBlood' App.  See posters around the school for the link.  See Ms Chapman in room 136 for a field trip permission form and any questions.  Donate and save lives!

 

Careers

Are you interested in Engineering?  This is the LAST CALL for any students interested in TEAC 105 - The Engineering Sampler Course at Camosun College for next school year.  Please see Mr. Bussoli in Room 217 as seats are filling up fast.

 

School Bus Registration for 2022-2023

Registration is now open for students to ride the school bus for the next 2022-2023 school year.  Students must be registered with SD63 Transportation Department and hold a current year bus pass in order to ride on the bus.  Registration is on-line, and you will need the following information when registering: Student Name, School, Grade, Student Number.  Here is the LINK for registration, and it will close June 15, 2022

 

Studio 63 Open for Business

Did you know that School District #63 has its own Hairstylist training programStudio 63 offers Hairdressing training in partnership with Vancouver Island University.  Appointments can be made at the studio MONDAYS-WEDNESDAYS from 12:45 to 4:00 pm or THURSDAYS from 11:30 to 6:00pm for a $5 haircut, style or scalp massage!  To book an appointment, call 250-652-5381 and support our own SD#63 Hairdressing program (located at the Saanichton Learning Centre, 1649 Mt Newton X Rd).  Walk-ins are welcome too!

 

Antigen Tests for Students

Reminder to students that if you didn’t pick up your box of 5 antigen tests yet, they are available in the office. Students are allowed to receive one box each.

 

Absences and Illness

A reminder that parents/guardians notify the school office every day that a student will be absent from school. PLEASE indicate if the reason for absence is for illness; the Ministry of Education requires that schools specifically track how many student absences are due to illness. Please notify either the Attendance email: claremont_attendance@saanichschools.ca or by phone message: 250-658-6666.  Please perform BC’s K-12 daily health check before arriving at school by clicking HERE .

 

ATHLETIC

Claremont Badminton

The Senior Badminton Team had a win and a loss this week in the high school league play.  The team showed that it can play with heart, enthusiasm, and spirit.  Highlights include a winning a thrilling 22-20 doubles match from Elaine and Alexia at SMUS, accompanied by spirited cheering from the team.  Alexia SOGAI finishes off regular league play with a perfect 10-wins, no losses!  Congrats!!  Senior City Playoffs are up next, and Junior City Playoffs start next week.

Everyone is welcome to come to badminton drop-in and practice: TODAY and NEXT WEDNESDAY after school.

 

Golf Team

Congratulations the golf team who represented Claremont at the first tournament of the year in Parksville on Tuesday. Our Spartans narrowly lost by 3 strokes and received the silver medal.  The team shot a four-player (4 best scores of 5 players count) combined total of 295 strokes.

Grade 12 Willy BISHOP was second overall with a score of 69, and Grade 10 Matt MILIKOWSKI was 3rd overall with a score of 71.  The other members were grade 11 Cooper ALEXANDER and grade 10's Milan SANGHA and Jakob HAGENMUELLER.

The Spartans will be sending two teams to the Delta Police Tournament on Monday, where they will be competing against some of the province's best teams.  Go Spartans!

 

CLUBS

Robotics Fundraiser – Bake Sale TODAY

The Robotics Club will be running a bake sale TODAY at lunch time in the student lounge.  This is a fundraiser for their trip to the World Championships in Dallas, Texas.  Bring your sweet tooth, enjoy a delicious treat, and help out your robotics teams! Thank you for your support!

 

Robotics Fundraiser – Paradise Island Cheese

Three Claremont VEX Robotics teams are travelling to complete in the World Championships in Dallas, Texas in May!  Paradise Island Foods has provided us with an opportunity to sell their 880g variety packs that include Monterey Jack, Sharp Cheddar, Gouda and Smoked Applewood Cheddar cheeses.  Please consider supporting our excited students by purchasing a pack for $25 by emailing ClaremontVexRobotics@gmail.com   Include your name, a contact number and how many packs you would like to purchase and we’ll be in touch!  Selling until April 29; delivery/pick up May 13-14th. GRAD 2022

Grad Packages – Due TODAY

If any grade 12's missed last week’s grad assembly, they can pick up their information package in the office, which provides details and forms about graduation events: the grad ceremony, grad dinner/dance, and the Grad Scavenger Hunt.  All Grad Forms and payment are due in the Accounting Office by the end of TODAY.

 

Scholarships

Grads!  Apply for Scholarships today!  Claremont will be giving out $58,250 in scholarships this year.  You can't win if you don't apply!  The application portal is open.  All applications are online through Claremont's website.  Check out the scholarships page.  The deadline for applications is Friday, April 22.  Do not miss out on this amazing opportunity!!!

 

Grad 2022 Fundraiser – Pizza Lunch April 22

TOMORROW at lunch, please come support your graduates by purchasing hot delicious Domino’s pizza in the cafeteria. Pizza is $2.50 a slice or buy a box and share with your friends! There will also be pop and chips available. CASH SALES ONLY (no punch cards, sorry).

Grad 2022 Fundraiser - Silent Auction

The grad committee is actively seeking silent auction donations for their upcoming online auction in May. If you have a donation you would like to contribute (monetary, service item, gift certificate etc) we would love to include it in our auction. Fire-Fighting Info Meeting - Apr 27

Shaun Gutkin, from Firefighter/First Responder Training Academy will be visiting Claremont on WEDNESDAY, April 27 10:30-11:30 (during Block 2) in room 314. He will be telling students about education options and job opportunities with the academy. All are welcome! If you will be missing your block 2 class, make sure you have spoken with your teacher.

 

Canadian Coast Guard Days - June 10

Are you curious about jobs with the Canadian Coast Guard? There will be an exciting event at the Canadian Coast Guard Victoria Base on FRIDAY, June 10.  Two hours of info and demonstrations include: helicopter operations, vessel tours, search and rescue, aids to navigation, as well as learning about the various job opportunities within the organization.  If you are interested in attending, contact Mrs. Watson by April 14.  cwatson@saanichschools.ca or in room 222.

Changes to BC School Food Guidelines

The BC Government has put out a survey to gather feedback on proposed changes to the Guidelines for food and beverage sales in B.C. Schools.  Please take a moment to fill out this survey as it could mean big changes for the way our schools hold events and run fundraisers.

2SLGBTQ2IA+ Drop-in Social Group

There is a new 2SLGBTQ2IA+ drop-in social group at The Upside Youth Centre.  MONDAYS from 3:30 – 5:30pmThis is a safe space to be yourself and connect with a youth leader and peers. Play games, make crafts, spend time outside and connect with our staff. Youth in Grade 6 - 12 are welcome! Sign up HERE.

 

Peninsula Youth Clinic

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at 2379 Bevan Avenue in Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30-7:30pm for help with any medical concern (physical, mental, and sexual health). Call 250-656-4143 to make an appointment with a physician or counsellor.  Services are 100% free, confidential, and explicitly inclusive of all genders and sexualities!
