Presentations will begin tomorrow in class.  Please be advised that if your group is unable to present and you do not have an excused reason, you will lose 10% per day.

Homework: Complete the chapter 1 & 2 focus questions for In the Heat of the Night and start working on your literary paragraph for either Sam Woods or Chief Gillespie (see hand out)

If  you were away today...

Please write the questions and answers into your notebook.  Set up your page in Cornell Style (wide margin).  Place questions in the left margin and answers can be in point form on the right side of the page.

Focus Questions for Chapters 1 & 2 (set up in Cornell Style)

Chapter 1:

  1. Where does the novel take place?

  2. Why did Sam go to the all night drive in? Who did he talk with there?

  3. Who was the dead man? What was his profession?

  4. What two neighbourhoods/districts are mentioned in chapter 1? What does this indicate to the reader?

Chapter 2:

  1. Who is Bill Gillespie? Why was he awakened at 4:04 a.m.?

  2. Where did Bill tell Sam to go? Why?

  3. Who did Sam see once he arrived at the train station? What was Sam's first impression of this man?

  4. How did the “prisoner” react to Sam? Who, in fact, was he?
