If you were away today, we

  • did a lesson on when to use who and when to use whom (technical Tuesday)
  • discussed the story "The Ruum" and did focus questions (listed below)
  • read the poem "David" by Earle Birney.  I have attached a copy of the poem to this post
  • created a chart for "David"

Homework:

  • start working on the chart - paraphrase each section.  You will have class time to work on this tomorrow.

Focus Questions for "The Ruum"

1. What does Jim notice about the assortment of live specimens he encounters?

2. What is the ruum's task?

3. What does the ruum do right after the grizzly cuffs it? Why isn't the ruum interested in the grizzly bear?

4. Why is Jim's weight significant to the story?

5. What makes the pursuer in the story (the ruum) terrifying?

6. How does the author build suspense in this story?

7. In your opinion, would the ending have been more satisfying if Jim had succeeded in destroying the ruum? Explain.
